When I arrived at VU Amsterdam in 2021, I could never have imagined that I would one day run for the University Student Council. Finding my place within the university community felt like a challenge.
I was more reserved back then. Speaking up, approaching new people and taking opportunities did not come naturally to me. Running for a position in which I would share my ideas and ask students to place their trust in me seemed outside my comfort zone. Yet here I am.
It would be easy to describe this growth as an individual achievement: I became more confident, took initiative, and found my voice. But that would leave out the most important part of my story. I did not come out of my shell alone. The friendships and communities I found at VU helped me do so.
Some people became close friends who encouraged me. Others may not realise the difference they made. A welcoming conversation, an invitation to join something or a few encouraging words can seem insignificant. But these gestures accumulate. They make someone feel they belong, and belonging gives people the confidence to participate.
My friends gave me spaces where I did not need to be the loudest person in the room. They listened, included me, and allowed me to grow at my own pace. Gradually, I began saying yes to things that once intimidated me. I started expressing my opinions, accepting responsibilities, and believing I had something valuable to contribute. Eventually, that journey led me to the student council.
Not every student finds that sense of belonging easily. That is why creating an open and welcoming university community matters. As chair of the student council, I want to help create the kind of community that helped me. I want students to feel heard before they have learned to speak the loudest. They should know they do not need to be the most confident version of themselves to deserve a place here.
Looking back at the person who arrived in 2021, I am proud of how far I have come, but even more grateful to everyone who helped me get here. Now I want to offer that same feeling to others.
Sometimes, all it takes to bring someone out of their shell is showing them that there is a place for them beside you.
