Students stand with VU staff strike against education cuts

On April 7th, VU employees will join the nationwide strike against the €1.2 billion education budget cuts. These cuts are a direct attack on the quality of our education and the freedom of students to choose their studies. SRVU Student Union unequivocally supports this strike and calls on all students to do the same.

The Dutch government’s plan to slash €1.2 billion from the education budget has sparked widespread alarm. This decision, following two decades of declining per-student funding, is a devastating blow to the academic community. SRVU argues that these cuts will fundamentally undermine higher education, impacting both teaching quality and research opportunities.

These proposed €1.2 billion education cuts are a grave threat, diminishing educational quality and access, while forcing students into further debt. This short-sighted policy will stifle crucial research and ultimately harm the Dutch economy. We must resist this attack on our future and demand investment in education, not its destruction.

Per-student funding has drastically decreased over the past two decades, and this doesn’t even account for the additional €1.2 billion cuts.

How Can You Help?

Be there on April 7th!
“It’s not enough to sympathize with your favorite teacher going on strike. It’s time to act on your anger by showing up on April 7th with your friends to march for your own education and future,” states Jedidja Kloens, SRVU representative.

Sign the solidarity petition
SRVU emphasizes the importance of solidarity. We urge fellow students to show their support by signing the petition at https://petitie24.nl/petitie/5733/. Your support alleviates potential worries of striking employees.

Join the open meeting
We need your support to mobilize more students for April 7th. Therefore, we invite everyone to an open meeting on Monday, March 24th at 5:00 PM in StudentenD0k (floor 0d, main building). This meeting will be a platform for students to learn more, share concerns, and coordinate actions in solidarity with the striking employees.

Through these actions, you can support our striking staff and work together to show the government that these education budget cuts are unacceptable. John Marinus, SRVU board member: “United we stand, divided we bargain.”
